I found today's class to be tremendously helpful (as usual). I will be (happily) ripping off Simona's Virginia Woolf's piece and using it with Fences and I thoroughly enjoyed Mary's Sarah Palin visual.
Thank you all for your participation in the seminar on Woolf's speech. I can't wait to do it with the kids tomorrow and see what they do with it. I was reminded again just how valuable it is to practice something with a group of peers before taking it into the classroom. I aspire to do this kind of preparation for every class! Aspire being the key word there. :) Thank you again. Simona
Participating in socratic seminars is a valuable experience for teachers. Often times, we try things with our students that we have not had the opportunity to experience ourselves. I feel that I have a better awareness of what the students will be thinking and feeling during the process.
When I ran a seminar in my classroom, I was surprised by how much I felt the students got out of the debriefing process at the conclusion of the seminar. Students had the opportunity to reflect on their participation as well as hear feedback from their peers.
Thank you all for participating in my seminar and providing feedback!
Both of the seminars from today were amazing. Thank you Simona and Mary. I think it was Simona who said that students respond very well to images. I may start to include images into our discussions more regularly. It is amazing the connections and conclusions that can develop.
At first I felt overwhelmed at all the wonderful things that all of you are doing in your classrooms. I have never run a seminar except for the little piece I did with bullying in my resource rooms. I have prepared a piece after meeting with my ELA co-teacher that we will use, so tomorrow you will be my guinea pigs! I am taking the advice that I give some of my students, one baby step at a time!
